The Story

Natural Ingredients

  • New Zealand sun is fierce. The UV index (the measure of the sun’s burning power) in summer is much higher here than just about anywhere else in the world, so maximum protection is absolutely essential.
  • Our Pure ShadeTM Moisturising Brightening Sunscreen has a broad-spectrum UVA / UVB SPF50+ rating, which has been verified by Dermatest Australia to international specifications.
  • Pure Shade meets the following standards:
    1. 2012 AS/NZ 2604 Standard - “classed as Very High Protection Sunscreen. Can be labelled up to SPF78”
    2. Under the E.U. & ASEAN Certification - “classified as Very High Protection. Can be labelled up to SPF50+”
  • Pure ShadeTM - Moisturising Brightening Sunscreen and Pure ShadeTM - Moisturising Brightening Anti-pollution After Sun Repair are not just sun care products. Both contain special moisturising and rejuvenating agents which can help simplify your skin care regime.
  • “It’s not just about sun protection. I wanted a way to eliminate some of the products I used daily – to replace my moisturiser and various age defying creams and lotions. I’m 100% sure you’ll be as happy as I am in the way Pure ShadeTM feels on your skin and the results you will see.” – Natasha Urlich-Candy, NZ Sunscreen founder.

    Sunscreen Tips

    • Apply sunscreen liberally to all sun-exposed areas so that it forms a film when initially applied. Most people use sunscreens improperly by not applying enough. Remember it takes at least 6 teaspoons of lotion to cover the sun-exposed areas of the body of one average adult person.
    • It takes 20-30 minutes for sunscreen to be absorbed by the skin and it can be rubbed off very easily, so apply it at least half an hour before going out in the sun. Reapply after half an hour so that the ‘mountains’ as well as the ‘valleys’ are protected (imagine you are painting a wall – two coats of paint provide a more even cover than one).
    • Re-apply sunscreen every 2 hours if staying out in the sun for more than an hour during the day.
    • Re-apply immediately after swimming, excessive sweating, or if rubbed off by clothing or toweling.
    • Insect repellents reduce the sunscreen's SPF so when using together, re-apply more often
    • Sunscreen is only one part of your defense against harmful UV rays. Limit your time in the sun and wear cover up clothing

What do the SPF numbers mean?

"SPF" stands for "sun protection factor". It's a measure of protection against mainly UVB rays, the ones that cause sunburn. The higher the SPF number, the greater the protection - up to 50+.

The new Australian/New Zealand standard limits SPF claims to 50 in line with other international standards.

An SPF15 sunscreen that's properly applied is meant to give you 15 times the protection you'd get with unprotected skin. So if you were outside in the sort of sun that burns unprotected skin in 10 minutes, then SPF15 would give you 150 minutes of protection. For SPF30 sunscreen that time would extend out to 300 minutes and for SPF50 it would be 500 minutes (see our Graph).
